The Grotta dell’Angelo, a place of worship linked to the Italian-Greek religious and monastic tradition, lies only 1 kilometer from the town centre of San Pancrazio Salentino, in the territory of Masseria Torrevecchia, in the very heart of a large park.
The cave is accessed via a staircase with seven large steps: a large pillar supports the partly collapsed vault, while in the rear there’s a rectangular niche which probably accommodated the altar. The walls are frescoed with figures of saints, depicted according to the Byzantine style, clad in richly decorated ample cloaks while holding books in their hands and with a halo crowning their heads. On the left-hand wall stands out St. Vitus, identified by the presence of the dog, a traditional element of his iconography.
Formerly used as a chamber tomb, the cave and the extraordinary complex of silos, ancient burial sites, is part of the Basilian settlement dating back to the 4th century, rated among the country’s most important historical monuments.

Architecture and works
