Farmhouses and oil mills If it rains

Semi-underground olive oil mill

Mesagne (BR)

Beneath the Palazzo dei Gaza, a typical example of noble architecture in the Salento Baroque style now housing municipal offices, it is possible to visit one of numerous examples of 16th century underground olive oil mills and learn about the great importance of the oil-making process, how the oil was stored in cisterns in the Castle and the way the olives were traditionally farmed and processed in the area.

The trappeto, as this kind of press was called, was operational up to the end of the 19th century. There are four rooms, each containing a Calabrian-type millstone and small well-like vats connected to Genoese-type presses.

It is currently used to host various local cultural events.
