The cave church of Madonna of Sette Lampade or Santa Caterina
Located south of the city of Mottola, in the heart of a cave village, the rock church dedicated to Santa Caterina, also known as Madonna of Sette Lampade, is set in an extraordinary natural scenery and is still today devoted to the Christian cult.
A steep path covered with gravel and pebbles leads into the cave, which is accessed through four steps. The interior, divided into two naves punctuated by cross-shaped piers, terminates in two half-round apses, which testify to the coexistence of Greek and Latin rites.
The holy water font resting on a short column, placed between the apses, was most certainly added later than the 14th century, as replacement for the basin or fountain located outside the church, something that evidences the Latinization of this place of worship.
During Christmastime, the caves of Sette Lampade become the enchanting natural setting for the spectacular reenactment of the Living Nativity, staged by hundreds of costumed characters with beautiful light choreographies.
The story
For now this text is only available in Italian.
Architecture and works
Legends and traditions
