Surrounded by the maquis shrubland of the Lama D’Antico Park in Fasano, the small church of San Lorenzo is part of one of the most important cave settlements in the whole Puglia, decorated with ancient paintings.
A narrow entrance walks you into the crypt, beautifully decorated with frescoes and iconic depictions of saints and religious scenes. In this place, the bare rock and the man’s hand blend into one another, defining an evocative holy space, where the stone is molded according to the needs of medieval religiosity.
In an excellent state of conservation, the decorations of the little church of San Lorenzo rank among the best examples of medieval rock art, a rare vestige of devotion that has managed to triumph over bare stone throughout the centuries.
