The rural park of Lama d'Antico, San Giovanni and San Lorenzo, one of the largest and most interesting cave settlements in Puglia, consists of network of caves communicating with each other via paths and rock-cut stairways, spread across the golden-yellow wheat fields and the endless rows of olive trees of Fasano's countryside. Probably used from prehistoric to modern times, the village consists of two areas, the first one built around the churches of San Giovanni and San Lorenzo, and the second one encompassing the cave habitats, with stalls, production spaces and common areas. The heart of the village is represented by the crypt of Lama d'Antico, among the largest in Puglia, a true cathedral carved out of tuff stone towards the end of 1000AD, which originally was entirely frescoed and punctuated by a series of small arches. Here have been unearthed relics from the Bronze age and tombs. Besides its fascinating history, a unique spectacle it's offered by the rural landscape, surrounded by the maquis shrubland and sprinkled with golden caper bushes and centuries-old trees, lined along drystone walls and impressive lame formations.
