In the area of Martano, on the border with the countryside of Zollino, the Casale of Apigliano is a unique archaeological site, which consists of several layers belonging to different periods and many finds have been discovered here.
During researches, the archaeologies of the University of Salento have discovered that in this place there used to be a village already during the 8th century. Ruins of houses and several utensils for everyday use testify to the life during the byzantine period.
Moreover, many other finds, such as tombs and ossuaries belonging to a small cemetery, testify to the Angevin period. There is also the Church of Santa Maria, belonging to the old village, known as Church of San Lorenzo.
