In the heart of Oria, during the excavations along Via Erodoto finds and buildings dating back to Archaic and Imperial Roman period, fascinating archaeological evidence of a great importance, have been brought to light.
Three furnaces with circular combustion chamber, a perimeter wall made of clay and a central pillar date back to the archaic period. Instead, the ruins of a rectangular building, of which the outer part still exists, date back to the late-archaic period. The complex with three rooms built on former buildings dates back to the Republican period.
Not far away from via Erodoto, after the restoration of the Castle they have brought to light interesting archaeological finds belonging to different periods, which, together with ceramics, coins and other objects, are part of the Centro Archeologico di Documentazione Messapica (Archaeological Centre of Messapic Documentation).

Il sito archeologico di via Erodoto si trova nel centro di Oria 1. Gli scavi hanno restituito reperti e strutture databili tra l'epoca arcaica e l'età romana imperiale 1. Tra le strutture, la scheda regionale indica tre fornaci di età arcaica, i resti di un edificio rettangolare tardo-arcaico e un complesso di tre vani di età repubblicana 1. Età repubblicana
All'età repubblicana è stato datato un complesso di tre vani impostato su strutture preesistenti 1.

Antiquity
Oria corrisponde alla città messapica di Uria, citata da Erodoto (Storie 7.170), da Strabone (Geografia 6.3.6-7), da Livio (42.48) e da Plinio il Vecchio (Storia naturale 3.100) 2. Le fonti consultate non collegano in modo esplicito lo scavo di via Erodoto a un settore preciso dell'abitato antico. Una sintesi dello studio di Scardozzi (2014) descrive un villaggio di capanne, una città arcaica e la massima espansione in età ellenistica, con mura di 3.900 m su 110 ettari, seguita dal declino in età romana (secondo una pagina web di sintesi) 3,4. I reperti in ceramica, le monete e altri materiali dei dintorni sono esposti presso il Centro Archeologico di Documentazione Messapica 1.
