The very heart of one of the most important settlements in the region, the small church of St. John the Baptist, together with the church of San Lorenzo, is part of Lama d’Antico Rocky Park, an extraordinary tiny window into history, nestled in the middle of the Maquis shrubland and endless rows of olive trees, in the land of Fasano.
The church of St. John, completely carved out of the rock bank, in the manner of the Byzantine crypts, emanates a strong sense of sacredness, thanks to the excellent state of conservation of its liturgical elements, such as the little apsis, the iconostasis and countless paintings, among which the main fresco, depicting St. John the Baptist.
In front of the chapel, there’s a stepped basin, probably a baptismal font. The crypt’s façade that partially collapsed, has been replaced with a structure in tuff stone.
The story
For now this text is only available in Italian.

Architecture and works
