The massive Palace of the Prefecture, today the seat of the Provincial Council, overlooks the Mare Grande from which it can be marveled at in all its grandeur. Its monumental layout makes it a landmark of the city soaring over the seafront silhouette.
The building was designed to capture light and create interesting interplays of light and shadows. It features bastions that confer it a military appearance, as though it belonged to those constructions typical of Swabian castles.
It was the architect’s intent to give to the city of Taranto a building that could endure through time. He achieved his goal by creating a colossus whose sheer size and style epitomized all the grandeur of Roman architecture: he made use of the brick but replaced the travertine with Trani stone for the large foundations.
The story

Architecture and works
