In the new village of the city the massive bronze sculpture dedicated to the sailors of the Italian Navy is found here.
The work was created in 1974 by the sculptor Vittorio Di Cobertaldo, at the request of Admiral Angelo Iachino, commander of the navy fleet of the Italian Regia Marina in Taranto during the Second World War.
The sculpture was a gift to the city that was the stage for the famously sad “Notte di Taranto” (Night of Taranto), and is about 7 meters tall resting on a pedestal and is a depiction of two sailors greeting boats that are about to cross the canal that connects the Big Sea with the Little Sea, by lifting up their typical cap with their right hand.
The work is fully integrated with the ancient railing on corso Due Mari on which a five-pointed star and the coat of arms of the Marina dei Savoia, and expresses the indissoluble connection between the city and the sea.
