Messapic city walls

Carovigno (BR)

Along the streets of Carovigno it is still possible to see the ruins of the ancient city walls, which used to surround the old town of Carbina,  a flourishing Messapic centre at a time when the area of Brindisi was dominated by  the Iapyges.

According to the tradition, Carbina was a fortified citadel, surrounded by three circles of city walls, build around the hill, the highest point of the town centre, where there used to be the acropolis, protected by impressive walls made of large blocks of stone.

Towards the valley, two circles of city walls used to limit to area of the necropolis, but this was not enough to save the town from terrible Messapic wars and, in 473 BC, Carbina was plundered by the troops of Taras.

Nowadays, nearby the present cemetery, it is possible to see several fragments belonging to the second circle of city walls while, in the lowest part of the town centre, there are some chamber tombs together with grave goods.
