The very ancient Menhir della Luce is one of the most mysterious in Castri di Lecce. The monolith is located in Via Indipendenza, in the periphery of the town, between via Armando Diaz and Via IV Novembre. The name comes from the nearby chapel dedicated to Madonna della Luce, built next to an old well.
The enigmatic stone embedded in the ground, is about 2.50 metres high, but it has probably been shortened or accidentally damaged over the centuries. The local scholar Cosimo De Giorgi, in 1916, recorded indeed an increase in its height. The menhir has some engravings on the corners, whose meaning is still a mystery.
