The Martignano semi-underground olive oil mill, part of the “Palmieri” Tourist Cultural Park complex, is located in the basement of the Palazzo Palmieri, which has been completely restored and now hosts cultural events, art and other exhibitions and concerts.
The oil mill was built in the 17th century and extended from the 18th century onwards in order to improve the olive-pressing techniques. It still contains the vat that was used to collect the olives after crushing by the two millstones; around the vat are three cavities that once housed the Calabrian-type presses.
There are also animal feeding troughs, two sciave, which were for the storage of the olives, Genoese-type presses with adjacent collection vats, and the vertical wooden winch that was used to increase the pressure of the screws in the presses.
