The Scupola underground olive oil Mill is situated in Corte G. Carducci, not far from Piazza del Popolo, in the centre of the small town of Specchia.
It is made up of two different parts. In the first, which was dug out of the tufa rock around the 15th century, there is a millstone from the pressing vat and four Genoese-type presses, each with its own settling vat. The second part of the mill, which was dug out around the 17th century, has three millstones with their respective draining vats, eight Calabrian-type presses and other settling vats. Around the oil mill the visitor will notice other, closed-off areas that were used for storing the olives or as places where the workers could rest.
In Specchia it is also possible to visit underground oil mills in Via Perrone and at the monastery of the Black Franciscan Friars, which was built between the 11th and 16th centuries.
