Situated in San Pietro, a suburb of Laterza, at the heart of a rocky area between the Shrine of Mater Domini and the ravine, the Cantina Spagnola was founded in 1664 by Don Francesco Perez Navarrete, a Spanish noble who settled in Puglia.

It is assumed that the Cantina was used by the marquises of Laterza for high-society meetings and Masonic gatherings although it is highly probable that in ancient times it was a holy place, an ambiguity reflected in the fascinating painting decorations.

Featuring three chambers enclosed by an apsis, the cave church houses amazing paintings, such as the Nativity and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden in the first chamber, followed by a parade of ladies and knights in costume and the parody of a procession of clergymen in sackcloth.

The visit to the Cantina Spagnola is part of a more exhaustive route through the rocky landscape to discover the hidden treasures of Laterza’s territory.
