Crypt of Saint Marina

The Crypt of Saint Marina is located just outside the town center of Miggiano, adjacent to the town cemetery, and houses precious frescoes dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries. The sacred hypogeum is situated beneath the small church dedicated to the saint, the protector against jaundice and for women in childbirth, and it is accessed via a small staircase also carved into the rock.\n\nThe crypt consists of two chambers and a dromos leading to another small space. The first fresco that stands out is that of Saint Marina with the dragon and the small church of the saint above.\n\nTo the left opens the small chamber that holds the most precious treasure: a “Dormitio Virginis”, in which the Virgin is depicted lying down, surrounded by six Apostles while Christ supports the soul of his mother depicted as a baby in swaddling clothes. Other Byzantine frescoes embellish the cavern, including the figures of Saint Nicholas, Saint Catherine, and the Archangel Gabriel.
