The Crypt of San Giovanni

San Vito dei Normanni (BR)

Along the rocky ridges eroded by the Canal Reale in the Cafaro district, in San Vito dei Normanni, right behind the masseria Cafaro Piccole, lies the Crypt of San Giovanni which, together with other two larger caves, forms an underground complex.

Dating back to the 13th century and modified in the 15th and 16th century, the cave church has a rectangular plan and is accessed via a short staircase. The interior is divided into two naves with a central pillar on which rest three round arches.

The frescoed part, dating from the 13th century, are located in the central apsis and on the southern side wall, while the most ancient fresco is thought to be the one depicting the Archangel visible on the wall bordering the presbytery, on which are still visible Latin and Arab inscriptions.

The partly buried cave of the seven chambers, made up of a central corridor into which converge the seven side columns, is located in the same combe.
