The Carriero Atelier is one of a large number of old workshops that produce and sell the distinctive Grottaglie ceramics. It is located in the charming quarter of Grottaglie that runs along the San Giorgio Ravine, at the foot of the Episcopio Castle.
What makes this neighbourhood unique is the fact that its numerous ateliers are to be found in underground caves dug out of the rock; these were previously used for olive pressing. Some of the ateliers still have the old kilns, walls and ceilings blackened with smoke, semi-interred potter’s wheels and the containers for the storage of clay.
In the Carriero Atelier it is still possible to see the marks from the old pottery kiln, which unfortunately is no longer there. Visitors can also observe the master craftsmen at work in the various phases of production of ceramic artefacts.
The story
For now this text is only available in Italian.
History
In passato
In passatouncertain
Dates with an empty square are uncertain: few or unverified sources report them.
Architecture and works
