Antica Chiesa Madre

In the historic center of Massafra, the long Via Terra leads to the feet of the stately building of the Antica Chiesa Madre, built in the 16th century on the older structure of a crypt.\n\nIt has austere architecture, with a sober facade crowned by a rose window and a pediment housing the statuette of “Sante Miseriédde”, an angel, while the single-nave interior safeguards the effigy of the Sighing Christ and Baroque altars adorned with frescoes.\n\nThe remains of the medieval crypt, with traces of a tomb, were uncovered during recent restoration work and are now visible thanks to a glass slab embedded in the floor.
