Located at the heart of Lecce, just a stone's throw from the Castle of Carlo V, the Politeama Greco Theatre is one of the largest and oldest theatres in Puglia. In 1882 Donato Greco obtained from the town council the permission to build a theatre in San Martino square, according to the design by engineer Enrico de Cataldis, with stalls seating 600 people, 80 boxes, a loge and a gallery. Dedicated to the Prince of Naples, it was officially opened on 15 Novermber 1884. In 1913, following intense restoration works, the wooden structures were rebuilt in stone and the theatre was given the new name Politeama Donato Greco. Among the most prominent artists of the time, stands out the name of Tito Schipa, who had been the artistic director of the Politeama from the early 20's of the past century. Besides from being a theatre, the building is also used for performances of the orchestral and opera season of the Lecce province.
