The Quercia Vallonea in Tricase, an oak known as “Quercia dei cento cavalieri” (Oak of the hundred knights), is along the street which takes to the Tricase Porto. The impressive tree is more than seven hundred years old: the circumference of its trunk is 4.25 metres, the foliage covers almost 700 square metres and its 15 metres high.
The oak, a real natural monument among the most important ones in Puglia, is inside the Regional Nature Park Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase and is part of Tricase countryside, which surrounds the small forest of Valloneo or Falanide, with more than 60 oaks on an area of almost 4.925 square metres. The forest, with its wonderful endangered trees, once used by local tanners to obtain tannin, have been included in the cultural-tourist itineraries financed by the European Community and considered natural monuments to protect and preserve.

Legends and traditions
