The very name Menhir Pietragrossa (Huge stone), the unique evidence of pietrefitte (dolmen and menhirs) in the area of Novoli, recalls other dimensions.
The ruins of the monolith are indeed in a plot of land in the countryside along the street which leads to Campi Salentina. It has withstood over the time, with its mound of really ancient stone, no more than 1 metre high, embedded in a drystone wall.
The menhir has a hole in the upper part and when Giuseppe Palumbo discovered it in 1948, it had no more the impressive size, which in the past had given the name to the street. Palumbo describes it as made of tufa limestone and he thinks that is for this reason that the menhir is damaged.
