The Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca is a fascinating place that blends history, culture, and tradition. It’s an ancient oil mill, carved into a natural cave and dating back to the medieval period, a true archaeological gem that takes us back in time to when olive oil was produced using traditional methods and used first as “lampante” oil to fuel ceramic oil lamps, the only source of illumination at the time; and then, also used for a variety of food, medical and hygienic purposes.
After being abandoned in the late 1960s, it has recently undergone renovations, bringing this place steeped in history back to life. Visitors can admire the ancient tools, the fossils embedded within its walls, and the techniques once used to extract “green gold” and lastly, oil lamps produced from ceramic and made with 3D printing, as a testament to a centuries-long story.
Today, the oil mill is a museum, a popular destination for anyone visiting Martina Franca, offering a chance to discover a piece of the city's history and immerse themselves in a sensory experience. Guided tours are available, complete with olive oil tastings and local products from Martina Franca.
