Rupestrian Church of Christ at the Cave

Martina Franca (TA)

Hidden away in a residential area close to Viale Europa in Martina Franca stands the rupestrian church of Christ at the Cave, a tiny mediaeval and baroque gem.

Built in the 17th century over a pre-existing cave, the central-plan church is slightly larger on the left side, probably to align with the cave beneath. The altar, which is in the baroque style, is positioned on a mass of rock; to the sides, two angels hold aloft symbols of the martyrdom of Christ. Below the altar is a statue of the dead Christ with realistic wounds; it is said to have miraculous powers.

From 1792 the church became a shrine for pilgrims both from Martina and elsewhere who came fleeing wars, epidemics and famines in the hope that this Jesus might perform a miracle. On the right hand wall are impressive frescoes painted by the Martina artist Carella in 1791 as well as a fresco depicting the crucified Christ, the two Marys, the Holy Spirit, and the sun and moon.
