Cathedral of Castro

In the heart of the characteristic Castro, the Cathedral is enveloped in the charm of the Middle Ages. Today a parish dedicated to the protector Saint Mary of the Annunciation, in 1171 the church probably arose on the remains of a Greek temple and, over the centuries, underwent numerous alterations.\n\nThe cathedral, which still retains many Romanesque features, remains an important place of faith for the townspeople. For centuries it also welcomed pilgrims from nearby towns as it was the seat of the now-defunct diocese.\n\nThe interior of the sacred building reveals a true pinacotheca, with several paintings adorning the altars alongside the fresco of Saint Lucia, the 18th-century pulpit, the wooden urn containing the relics of Saint Dorothy, and some exquisite papier-mâché processional statues.
