Along the streets of Carovigno, the remains of the ancient city wall that surrounded the now vanished city of Carbina are still visible, a flourishing Messapian center at a time when the Brindisi area was dominated by the Japygians.\n\nBuilt according to tradition, Carbina was a fortified town, embraced by no less than three concentric defensive walls, erected around the hill, the highest point of the center, where the acropolis stood, protected by a cyclopean wall of massive irregular stones.\n\nFurther down, two other defensive walls marked the boundary of the necropolis area, but this was not enough to save the city from the terrible Messapian wars and, in 473 BC, Carbina was sacked by the troops of Taras.\n\nToday, near the current city cemetery, numerous fragments of the second defensive wall can be seen, while in the lowest part of the town, some chamber tombs complete with funerary offerings can be found.
